French 1

A.  Textbook and Materials:

Voilà! - An Introduction to French (with Audio CD)
5th Edition
L. Kathy Heilenman, Isabelle Kaplan, Claude Tournier  

Workbook/Lab Manual. The workbook closely follows the organization of the main text to provide additional reading, writing, listening, and pronunciation practice outside of class.

VHS Video. The functions, grammar, and vocabulary are presented at the introductory level. Each segment represents a complete teaching unit filled with drama, culturally authentic situations and culturally-appropriate language. As students get to know the characters, they are exposed to both the modern-day and historical situations that render France and the Francophone world what they are today.

Students in French I begin their study of French with communicative activities based upon everyday themes. The vocabulary introduced and reviewed is rich in idiomatic expression. Vocabulary is presented visually and in brief narratives that provide a natural and engaging context for its acquisition. 

Regular and Irregular verbs are introduced in varied contexts. Tenses include le present, le passé composé, le futur proche, and le passé récent. Students complete  lessons 1- 10 this year. The materials include structured exercises designed to improve grammatical accuracy, contextualized activities that provide meaningful practice, and open-ended activities that develop communicative skills. Reading and writing are taught as active processes using authentic contemporary materials from francophone newspapers, magazines, literature, and other documents to train students in strategies that will make them independent readers. Writing assignments are guided with step-by-step questions that help students through the writing process. Students participate in the Annual COLT Poetry Recitation Contest in January.

Criteria for evaluation of student achievement include daily homework assignments, daily class participation, class presentations, participation in skits and plays, quizzes, Unit Exams, and an oral Mid-Year and a written Final Exam.

Laptops. Students will use PowerPoint to create verb templates, review vocabulary, and have discussions in French on topics appropriate to this level. They will send and receive e-mail, access the resources of the French-speaking world on my Web page, listen to French radio and French popular songs on the Internet, and be able to check their assignments posted on my Web page.

The proper use of subject pronouns with the verb être is reviewed and explored with all tenses. Selected readings and short plays, appropriate to the level, are introduced when the French two text is completed. Students participate in the Annual COLT Poetry Recitation Contest in January.

French 3

A. Textbook and Materials:

   Par tout le monde francophone. Test book.

The text, written entirely in French, surveys the francophone world and introduces authentic, amusing, and pertinent French stories drawn from many French-speaking cultures: Le Petit Nicolas series by Sempé and Goscinny, La Rue Cases-Nègres by Joseph Zobel, and numerous legends, poems, and short stories from Africa, La Martinique, Québec, and France. The authors systematically present, explain, and use topical vocabulary, expressions, and idioms. Grammatical structures illustrated in the stories are described, explained, and elaborated upon through a variety of exercises.

All past compound tenses as well as the passé simple are studied; the present and past subjunctive is introduced and emphasis is placed on the proper use of all verb tenses, especially in clauses which require the use of certain conjunctions such as depuis, quand, and si.
Criteria for evaluation of students' work include: daily homework assignments, class participation and pronunciation, oral class presentations, Internet projects, composition writing, quizzes, Chapter Exams, and a comprehensive exam Mid-year and a Final Exam.

Vocabulary, appropriate to the level, is introduced thematically. All verb tenses of the indicative and subjunctive moods as well as all parts of speech are reviewed in depth through abundant exercises and essay writing.

Listening and reading exercises activate and reinforce vocabulary.

Composition or essay topics are assigned on a weekly basis. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to read and analyze  a literary text and to formulate and express their critical opinions, judgments, and aesthetic responses to the text in correct written French. Criteria for evaluation include daily and long-term assignments, compositions, projects on the Internet, quizzes, exams, and a comprehensive exam mid-term and a Final Exam.

Policies:

Class Policies and Grading Procedures:

I will follow the student handbook in regard to absences and lateness to class. A student's grade may be lowered for missing an excessive number of classes.

Quizzes can be unannounced reviews of an assignment or announced on the homework sheet in advance. Quizzes (oral and written) constitute 20% of the trimester grade.

Unit Tests are always announced on the homework sheet a few days in advance. Students should know that they should begin reviewing when the unit of study is nearly completed. Students should review the day's work on a daily basis so that cramming is unnecessary. Extra help is always available if necessary. Unit Tests constitute 40% of the trimester grade. 

Class Participation, including daily preparation for class (oral and written) constitutes the final 40% of the trimester grade. In evaluating this grade, the teacher uses the following rubric:

The average for the year is the average of the three trimester grades plus the final exam. The mid-term speaking assessment is calculated into the second trimester grade. The final exam has a weight of 20% for freshman and sophomore courses (Levels 1,2, and 3) and 25% for junior and senior courses (Levels 4,5).
