|Welcome to Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut. We hope that you will enjoy visiting our website for a glimpse of life at our School. |
Since our School’s founding in 1848, Sacred Heart has educated young women to become leaders and play transformative roles in society. Our accomplished alumnae are testimony to the commitment of our distinguished faculty, who embody the mission of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, our School’s foundress and who established the Society of the Sacred Heart.
St. Madeleine Sophie continues to inspire me today. It was she who said: “I would have founded the Society for the sake of a single child.” She was a child of war - the French Revolution, who knew only too well the effects of terror and violence on society. She was a courageous woman whose formation and transformation took place in chaotic times, not unlike today. She was living proof that an individual with a generous heart coupled with strong intellectual capabilities and a devotion to education could become an inspirational leader.
Each year, our students celebrate her on the Feast of St. Madeleine Sophie. Each day, our School focuses on the principles she taught, which are the Goals and Criteria of a Sacred Heart education. Our commitment is to educate to the following five Goals and Criteria:
From preschool through twelfth grade, our students are expected to achieve their highest level of scholarship, while learning to assume leadership roles as responsible, compassionate and contributing members of society.
- A personal and active faith in God
- A deep respect for intellectual values
- A social awareness which impels to action
- The building of community as a Christian value
- Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.
We hope you will join us on this remarkable journey.

Pamela Juan Hayes ’64 became Head of School for Convent of the Sacred Heart on July 1. Mrs. Hayes was appointed Head of School beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year. The Board of Trustees reached its unanimous decision following a national search and with the enthusiastic participation of more than 400 parents, alumnae, faculty and staff, students, and friends.
Mrs. Hayes' experience with Sacred Heart began when she joined the first grade at Convent of the Sacred Heart. After graduation, she pursued a bachelor’s degree at Briarcliff College, and then received her master’s degree in teaching from Manhattanville College. She brings a strong record of experience in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools as a faculty member and administrator for three Sacred Heart schools – Greenwich, New York and San Francisco.
While at Greenwich, she taught English and drama, served as head of the Middle School, and directed the Middle School’s community service program. In 1996, she became Head of Convent of the Sacred Heart Elementary School at San Francisco. In 2000, Mrs. Hayes was appointed Director of the Schools of the Sacred Heart at San Francisco, a position she held until becoming Greenwich’s Head of School.
As a member of the Program and Planning Committee of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools (1989-1996), Mrs. Hayes deepened her understanding of Sacred Heart schools as transformational in nature. Her educational philosophy is aligned with St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, the foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart, who said: “I would have founded the Society for the sake of a single child.” She is dedicated to educating girls and young women to become leaders and play transformative roles in society.
