Prayer for our Children
by Elsa Fernandez Sanz de Tio (April 1966)
Make me good, Lord, for my children
with the kindness of simple things.
In every morning, in every night
In the truth of every day.
Make me strong, Lord, so that I may arrive
timely and without haste.
That I may know how to lighten their sadness
and share in their laughter.
Make me fair, Lord, to shape
a tranquil conscience.
That they may be free of unhealthy longings,
deep in their senses
and high in their sight.
Make me humble, Lord, when they are
triumphant and happy,
Let me be prudent and not awaken
adulation or envy.
And make me even more humble when they have to
overcome misfortune,
may your Ten Commandments sustain them,
my love comfort them
and your love guide them.
Shelter them, Lord, do not let them
traverse danger without end.
Let them enter clean and firm into the test
so they may find undisturbed happiness.
May they share
and wisely chose
who accompanies
them in life.
Let me be deserving of being a mother,
to be one
I was chosen by You. |
