Alumna Kat Spillane '11 speaks to broadcast students about working at NBC

Written by Mary Anne Gallagher '19

Sacred Heart Greenwich alumna Kathleen “Kat” Spillane ‘11 visited the Advanced Broadcast Journalism class on Friday November 17 to share her story with the students as well as lend advice to those considering a career in the industry.

Ms. Spillane explained how she originally wanted to be a lawyer, but after studying English at Dartmouth College and working as a legal assistant, she decided to pursue her high school passion, broadcast journalism, instead.
Since she had always enjoyed television, she entered the NBCUniversal Page Program, a highly selective one-year program where she was able to work on a variety of programs and assignments around the company. After completing this program in September, Ms. Spillane was hired as assistant to the segment producers for Late Night with Seth Meyers.

She also informed the students that much of what she learned while working on Sacred Heart’s award-winning news show, Today From the Heart, informed and served as the foundation for the work she did both in the page program and beyond.
“It was rewarding to hear Kat talk about how her experience in Sacred Heart’s broadcast journalism program provided a foundation for her current work at NBCUniversal. I remember her as an engaged and curious student. I am proud of her for pursuing this career,” said Studio Director and Broadcast Journalism Teacher Ellyn Stewart.
Ms. Spillane explained to students that there are many great college programs for broadcast journalism and film, but there are also other ways into the field like the NBCUniversal page program.

She also encouraged students to think about what they like to do when considering career options since she only began to work at NBCUniversal after thinking about how she enjoyed broadcast journalism and television. The students thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Spillane's visit and found her story both insightful and inspiring.
