Nearly 30 middle and high school students representing public and private Greenwich schools raked in awards for their photography, digital art, print making, film and animation in a regional art and writing competition.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, an organization that has supported the arts among teens since 1923, gives out awards and scholarship money to teens in grades 7-12 from public, private or home schools. In 2018, students submitted nearly 350,000 works of art and writing.

The Silpe Gallery at the University of Hartford will exhibit their work until Feb. 2. Eight of the students will advance to the national competition, and could be recognized at the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The organization announced regional winners, who were given awards titled Gold Key, Silver Key, Honorable Mention, American Visions Nominee and American Voices Nominee.

Submissions are judged blind by visual and literary artists, some of whom received awards in the past. Jurors look for originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

“The national awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition initiative and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers in the United States,” said Haley Sonneland, director of communications for Sacred Heart Greenwich.

Alumni include major names such as Andy Warhol, Ezra Jack Keats, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, John Updike, Sylvia Plath, Luis Jiménez, Mozelle Thompson, Joyce Carol Oates, Ken Burns, Robert Redford, Charles White, Lena Dunham and Myla Goldberg.
